The SA (storm troopers also known as the Brownshirts) was established in 1921 as a party militia and was engaged in violent attacks on other parties especially the communists to consolidate Hitler's power.

Role in Hitler's Rise to Power:
The SA was of great appeal to unemployed young men from the 1920s to 1930s and functioned as Hitler's paramilitary organization. However, after the purge, also known as the Night of the Long Knives in 1934, the SA became largely irrelevant to Hitler's plans and was effectively superseded by the SS although it was never formally dissolved.
