1953 Cooperative Farming :
The PRC's initial land reform of cooperative farming had been introduced in 1953 due to the euphoria of the 1949 revolution. The peasants had been urged to merge their resources by joining in farm collectives.
Role in Mao's consolidation of Power:
The collectives where the peasants farmed communally rather than for themselves individually was a seen as a complement to Mao's industrialization plans. It allowed him to gain more reputation as the leader of the great peasant revolution and it aided in the improvement in food production throughout the nation which supported his propaganda that he had a great economic strategy. However the despite the increase in food production, there was a severe labour shortage and the food were not evenly distributed to the urban workers in which the planners blamed the problem on the peasants and strengthened control over the communes.
