With the breakup of the Grand Coalition in March 1930, five Reichstag elections followed within three years. Chancellors Heinrich Bruning(March 1930-May 1932), Franz von Papen(June 1932-November 1932), and Kurt von Schleicher(December 1932-January 1933) struggled to rule without parliamentary majorities and were propped up by the use of the president's decree powers. Meanwhile, the Nazis were busy building up their forces and seeing their way into the parliament. In the Reichstag elections of September 1930, the Nazis obtained 107 seats. Hitler challenged Hindenburg in the elections of 1932 and forced a second vote. In the same year, Nazis won 230 votes and became largest German party. Finally, in November 1932, Hitler's party had obtained 196 seats and finally in 1933, he became chancellor.
