Definition
The Treaty of Versailles in 1919 put much of the blame and punishment on Germany for the war. Not only did Germany lose a lot of it's land and territory, but they were also forced to pay reparations. Germany had to pa £6,600 million in regular installments, either in gold or goods. However, Germany was not always punctual, which the Allies, especially France, got annoyed with.
Significance
The conditions of the Treaty of Versailles made many German citizens resentful and furious. These conditions and reparations caused Germans to feel "stabbed in the back" by those who agreed to the conditions in the first place. There was an increase in nationalism and support for extremist parties such as the Nazi party. In fact, in his own book "Mein Kampf", Hitler specifically uses the conditions of the Treaty of Versailles as an argument to encourage Germans to fight for their country.
