• Nixon Shock 1971: Nixon visits China àcooling of relations with US
  • mid-1970s: majority of Jap. wonder if they need US aid

• July 1972: Tanaka Kakuei became prime minister; wanted to shift industry from coast to inside of country
  • never happened because of Oil Shock in 1973àJapan was heavily affected because 90% of oil import was from the Middle East
  • but MITI made reforms to reduce reliance on oil

• 1975: economic growth 4 %

• 1982: Ministry of Education altered textbooks; changed wording so no negative image of Japan was portrayed

• during the 1980s: economy grew 4 %
  • criticism of other countries: Japan only cares about money
• late 1980s:
  • foreign anger increased
  • domestically: public anger increased as well
  • 1989: price escalation recession àin 1990/91
