A war in which opponents mobilize ALL available societal resources - economic, industrial, military, human, political/ideological - in the war effort.
SIGNIFICANCE
World War 1 was a total war, which destroyed much of the pre-war world. There was a loss of confidence, optimism, stability and faith in the future. The loss from the war made the participants and peacemakers act more on the terms of self-interest (Terms of the Paris Peace Conference), and less on the intent to help each other recover. This would then lead to the build up of World War 2.
